From November 2 to 30, 2025, NICHE Business Development and Consultancy Ltd. organized an international Internship program in Istanbul, Türkiye. The program focused on the critical theme “Seismology and Engineering: Seismic Resistance of Buildings and Structures, Ensuring Seismic Safety”.
The event convened high-level representatives from Uzbek ministries, universities, and regulatory bodies, alongside Turkish academic and research institutions. Hosting institutions included Istanbul Aydin University, Kandilli Institute of Research, Yeditepe University, İPKB, AFAD, and AKOM, ensuring a comprehensive blend of academic, technical, and policy perspectives.

The purpose of this program was:
To strengthen knowledge and skills in seismology and earthquake engineering.
To explore modern approaches to seismic resistance in buildings and infrastructure.
To provide practical frameworks for ensuring seismic safety in urban planning and construction.
To foster collaboration between Uzbek ministries, universities, and Turkish academic institutions.

During the program, participants demonstrated a high level of engagement in learning how Turkey, as an active seismic zone, manages and responds to emergency situations through an integrated and highly coordinated system. The 40 professionals from Uzbekistan actively participated in technical briefings, site visits, and simulation-based exercises hosted by leading Turkish institutions, gaining firsthand exposure to Turkey’s end-to-end disaster management cycle, from risk assessment and early warning systems to emergency response, recovery, and reconstruction.

To empower participants to implement seismic safety measures in their home country.
Notable Activities of the program was focused on;
Technical Seminars: Focused on seismic hazard assessment, structural engineering innovations, and earthquake-resistant design.
Workshops: Hands-on sessions on simulation models, seismic retrofitting techniques, and risk management strategies.
Expert Lectures: Delivered by Turkish professors and engineers on international best practices in seismic safety.
Institutional Visits: Participants toured laboratories and research centers specializing in earthquake engineering.
Policy Dialogues: Discussions on integrating seismic safety into national construction codes and regulatory frameworks.

The program emphasized the urgent need to integrate scientific research, engineering innovation, and policy frameworks to ensure seismic safety. Key insights included:
The importance of earthquake-resistant design in both new and existing structures, The role of seismology in urban planning, ensuring that infrastructure development aligns with seismic risk zones, The necessity of cross-sector collaboration between ministries, universities, and regulatory bodies, The ethical responsibility of governments and institutions to safeguard citizens through proactive seismic safety measures.

Their interactions with AFAD, AKOM, İPKB, and leading universities enabled them to critically examine real-case scenarios, operational protocols, and inter-agency coordination mechanisms applied in major earthquake events. This immersive learning experience fostered substantive dialogue on adapting Turkish best practices to the Uzbek context, particularly in strengthening institutional preparedness, enhancing seismic resilience of infrastructure, and improving cross-sector collaboration. Overall, participants displayed strong professional commitment, analytical rigor, and a clear intent to translate acquired knowledge into actionable policy and technical reforms within their respective institutions.

The program had a significant impact on participants by strengthening their technical competence, strategic awareness, and practical readiness in the field of seismic safety and disaster management. Through exposure to Turkey’s advanced seismology practices and emergency response systems, participants enhanced their capacity to assess seismic risks, design and evaluate resilient structures, and contribute more effectively to national preparedness frameworks.
The experience also broadened their professional perspectives, fostering greater inter-ministerial collaboration and equipping them with applicable tools and insights to support evidence-based policy making and infrastructure development in Uzbekistan.

The program had a profound impact on participants:
Enhanced Expertise: Gained advanced knowledge in seismology, engineering design, and seismic safety standards.
Policy Development: Strengthened capacity to update and enforce seismic safety regulations in Uzbekistan.
Institutional Collaboration: Established partnerships with Turkish universities for joint research and training.
Practical Application: Learned retrofitting techniques and risk management strategies applicable to Uzbek infrastructure.
Leadership Empowerment: Ministers and officials left with actionable frameworks to guide national seismic safety initiatives.

By the end of the program, participants had identified several areas for immediate application of what they learn from the international internship program. Some key areas of application include;
Updating Construction Codes: Integrating international seismic safety standards into Uzbek regulations.
Capacity Building: Training engineers, architects, and inspectors in earthquake-resistant design.
Infrastructure Audits: Conducting nationwide assessments of existing buildings and structures for seismic vulnerability.
Educational Integration: Introducing seismology and earthquake engineering modules in technical universities.
Public Awareness Campaigns: Promoting seismic safety knowledge among communities and construction stakeholders.

NICHE played an essential role as the organizer and institutional architect of the program:
Designed a curriculum that balanced technical depth with policy relevance.
Coordinated with Turkish universities to ensure a rich academic and practical environment.
Facilitated cross-sector participation, bringing together ministries, universities, and regulatory bodies.
Reinforced its reputation as a bridge-builder between Central Asia and Türkiye, advancing career development and institutional collaboration in critical fields like seismic safety.
